The County Library Is Closing. What Happens Next Is on the Ballot.

The Cache County Library is on track to close, with no plan in place to keep it open. This year, Providence City voters will decide a ballot question on whether the city should take over and fund the library itself.

What's Happening

County leadership has confirmed the library is closing, and no other plan exists to keep county library service in place.

That leaves two outcomes for Providence: the city funds and takes ownership of the library, or the library closes.

The Ballot Question

This is the official language voters will see:

"As the County Library is closing, should Providence City consider imposing a new property tax levy to fund a city public library and all related library services, which is estimated to cost the owner of a primary residence with a fair market value of $500,000 approximately $55.30 per year?"

A "yes" vote means the city will add a new property tax line item specifically to fund the library, and take over ownership so services continue in Providence.

What's at Stake

The choice comes down to two outcomes:

Fund it at the city level

Providence City takes ownership of the library and funds it through a new property tax. Library services continue.

The library closes

Without a city takeover, Providence is left with no public library.

What It Would Cost

$55.30per year

For the owner of a primary residence valued at $500,000 — about $4.61 a month.

Based on the fair market value used in the official ballot estimate. Actual cost varies with a home's assessed value.
